Section 5.3 Standards & Guidelines for Content Preparation

The following listing of standards and guidelines for the preparation of Content covers those aspects of Content preparation for which:

  • international and Australian standards and guidelines are available
  • Australian and Western Australian legislation apply
  • University legislation and policies apply.

Also outlined in this document are Murdoch guidelines for Content preparation that shall be provided as accompanying documents. The guidelines include: Corporate Style, navigation, metadata and archiving. Included in this document is a set of Murdoch Conventions for Content Preparation. These conventions, when applied to the preparation of Content should assist with ensuring Content complies with legislative requirements.

The listing of relevant legislation included here is indicative. Those with responsibility for Content need to be aware that MurdochNet Content may be subject to additional legislation, policies and codes of practice. The listing of University legislation and policies is also subject to revision.

The international, Australian and Murdoch standards and guidelines for Content preparation that are listed here shall be followed for Content (prepared or generated) using HyperText Markup Language (HTML). They should also be applied to Content prepared or generated using related format definitions for documents and data (eg. XML).

Content Preparation in Other File Formats

The preparation of Content in formats used for wordprocessing, spreadsheets, presentations and display should also comply with legislative requirements, Murdoch legislation and policies, and follow Murdoch guidelines for Content preparation, such as Corporate Style Guidelines for MurdochNet and Guidelines for Archiving MurdochNet Content. Content prepared in other file formats should have accompanying metadata.

Content Providers need to be aware that to comply with the Disabilities Discrimination Act 1992, accessibility issues should be addressed when providing Content in formats such as PDF. Each PDF file should be created using reliable software (eg. Adobe Acrobat Professional) and tested to ensure that it converts to an accessible format (eg. text or HTML), or a Content Provider should provide an equivalent accessible version in an alternative format such as RTF and HTML.
