Section 5 CONTENT MANAGEMENT

Content, as defined in Section 5 CONTENT MANAGEMENT, is a term applied to all forms of information. Content provided by, provided for, or selected for use by the Murdoch University community, and accessible via MurdochNet, shall be referred to as MurdochNet Content.

MurdochNet Content may be made available in many formats, although the predominant format to be used is HyperText Markup Language (ie. HTML), or related formats such as Extensible HTML (XHTML). Content may increasingly be generated on-the-fly from databases using Web-based applications or interfaces to proprietary (ie. third-party) application systems. Content may also be provided in file formats used for wordprocessing, spreadsheets, presentations and display (eg. PDF, RTF, PPT and Word).

The management of MurdochNet Content should ensure that end-users have ready access to up-to-date, accurate and authoritative information that is presented with a consistent style. End-users with disabilities should be able to identify, locate, retrieve and use MurdochNet Content. End-users should be able to make informed decisions about the usefulness of MurdochNet Content in meeting their information needs.

Content management, in the context of MurdochNet, shall include the following:

  • the accuracy of information within Content
  • the currency of information within Content
  • the authoritativeness of Content
  • the identification of Content that is subject to legislation
  • the security of Content
  • the preservation of Content.

Content management shall also include:

  • the description of Content (ie. metadata), including the format of Content and its location
  • the identification and retrieval of Content
  • the accessibility of Content
  • the availability of, or access constraints placed upon Content.

The provision of metadata for MurdochNet Content shall play a key role in:

  • contributing to the information retrieval process
  • facilitating the management of Content, whatever its format.

This document shall apply to the management of all MurdochNet Content accessed by MurdochNet Servers and Affiliated Web Servers.

This Content may be hosted on:

  • the computers used to run these Servers, or
  • other computers on the Murdoch University Network (eg. databases, Web-based applications, files hosted on FTP Servers).

This policy may also apply to any Content (eg. Associated Content) hosted on a Non-Affiliated Web Server, provided:

  •  that Content is prepared and maintained by an organisation recognised as being associated with Murdoch University,
  • the Content is made accessible via Registered Links in indexes, top-level navigation pages, or other applications and tools.

To facilitate the adoption of Content management practices throughout the University, this document defines the Content management responsibilities for a number of roles, including MurdochNet Coordinator, Web Liaison Officer, Content Custodian and Content Provider.

This document should assist organisation units or resource areas responsible for Content to develop Content Management Plans.
