Section 2 INTRODUCTION

Section 2.2 Boundary of MurdochNet

Section 2.2.3 Links

A link is a Uniform Resource Identifier used to identify an Internet-accessible resource. In the context of MurdochNet, a link is a string of characters accompanied by a title or image and embedded in a document in HTML or related format that is hosted on or accessed via a Web Server. The format most frequently used for a link is a Uniform Resource Locator, or URL. The protocol most frequently used is HTTP or HTTPS, however links are also made to resources accessible via other protocols (eg. FTP, telnet).

To facilitate reliable access to MurdochNet Content, links should be managed in ways that promote continuity or persistence and minimise link maintenance tasks, particularly those resulting from organisational restructuring and the relocation of Content.

Where links are provided to MurdochNet Content hosted on or accessed via Web Servers, the links shall make use of registered Server names (ie. Web Server aliases).

For the purposes of management of links in MurdochNet Content hosted on MurdochNet Servers and Affiliated Web Servers at Murdoch University, or in applications accessed by such Servers, links shall be categorised as:

a. Registered Links

b. University Content Links

c. Foreign Content Links

d. Internet Links
