Section 4 SERVER MANAGEMENT

Section 4.9 Responsibility for Web Servers

Section 4.9.12 Web Administrator

To facilitate the management of Web Servers, each organisation unit or resource areas shall assign to one or more persons the role of Web Administrator.

The Web Administrator shall be responsible for the operation and support of a Web Server that has been registered as either a MurdochNet Server or an Affiliated Web Server for their organisation unit or resource area. The Server’s role may be to host or provide access to Content for the organisation unit, or resource area, or to host or provide access to Content for a function, service, application, system, or publication.

A Web Administrator shall be responsible for:

(1) ensuring that a computer used to run a Web Server is housed in a physically secure location

(2) ensuring that any Web Server run on a computer that they are responsible for is registered appropriately

(3) participating in the initiation of the request process for a Web Server to be registered when that Server is run on a computer managed by their organisation unit or resource area

(4) advising organisation units or resource areas that wish to run an Affiliated Web Server of the requirement to use an approved alternate domain name; to have the alternate domain name registered with an accredited registration service after it has been approved by the Director, Office of Information Technology Services and prior to it being used in the Server registration process and added to the University‘s DNS

(5) advising individuals (staff, students) that they need to complete an online application form to run an Individual Web Server and that they need to register their Server and that a request for their Server to perform the role of an Internet Content Host will require authorisation by their organisation unit or resource area

(6) initiating a request for a registered Web Server to be authorised to perform the role of Internet Content Host

(7) the operation and support of a Web Server that has been registered as a MurdochNet Server, or an Affiliated Web Server for an organisation unit or resource area

(8) ensuring that adequate security measures are in place to prevent unauthorised access to the computers, and their associated software that are used to run MurdochNet Servers or Affiliated Web Servers for their organisation unit or resource area

(9) ensuring that only they, or persons authorised by them, may install software, upgrade operating systems, run or modify applications and programs on computers that are used to host MurdochNet Servers or Affiliated Web Servers for their organisation unit or resource area

(10) ensuring that the Content and software on a computer used to run a MurdochNet Server or an Affiliated Web Server is backed up independently and any backup tapes are stored in a secure physical location (ideally a separate physical location)

(11) ensuring that appropriate procedures are in place for recovery and restoration of Content to a Server in the event of the loss or corruption of files or data due to system failure.

(12) providing a system environment that ensures that only authorised Content Providers may add, modify and delete files on computers that are used to run MurdochNet Servers or Affiliated Web Servers for their organisation unit or resource area

(13) providing a facility that ensures that only Content Providers authorised to do so may publish Content for a nominated Web Site

(14) providing a person, when authorised by a Content Custodian, with access to a facility that enables them to publish Content for a nominated Web Site

(15) creating a user account for a person who has been authorised by a Content Custodian to use an account on a computer that is used to run a MurdochNet Server or an Affiliated Web Server for their organisation unit or resource area

(16) ensuring that (in the absence of a formal University’s exit routine for staff) regular review of user accounts on computers that run MurdochNet Servers and Affiliated Web Servers are undertaken and that user accounts that are no longer required are deleted

(17) determining whether it is appropriate to host Associated Content Sub-Category N (eg. Home pages of student clubs and societies) on a computer used to run a MurdochNet Server or an Affiliated Web Server for their organisation unit or resource area

(18) liaising with the MurdochNet Coordinator re an appropriate alias (or aliases) to be used when registering a Server as a MurdochNet Server

(19) liaising with the MurdochNet Coordinator re the association of an approved alternate domain name with a Web Server

(20) liaising with the University’s IT Security Manager and the MurdochNet Administrator re the use of a Secure Server and the registration of a Digital ID/Certificate

(21) removing or disabling a Web Server when advised to do so by the Head of Division (or their official nominee) who initially authorised the registration of the Server

(22) advising the MurdochNet Coordinator when a a Web Server alias is no longer required.
