Section 4 SERVER MANAGEMENT

Section 4.9 Responsibility for Web Servers

Section 4.9.9 MurdochNet Administrator

To facilitate the administration tasks related to MurdochNet, the Office of Information Technology Services shall assign a person the role of MurdochNet Administrator. Some areas of responsibility associated with this role may be shared with other designated staff within the Office of Information Technology Services.

The MurdochNet Administrator shall be responsible for:

(1) the operation and support of the MurdochNet Host

(2) the operation and support of designated Central MurdochNet Servers

(3) ensuring that adequate security measures are in place to prevent unauthorised access to the computers, and their associated software, used to run designated Central MurdochNet Servers

(4) ensuring that only they, or persons authorised by them, may install software, upgrade operating systems, run or modify applications, tools and other programs on computers used to run designated Central MurdochNet Servers

(5) ensuring that the Content and software on a computer used to run a Central MurdochNet Server is backed up independently and that backup tapes are stored in a secure physical location that is also a separate physical location

(6) ensuring that appropriate procedures are in place for recovery and restoration of Content to a Central MurdochNet Server in the event of the loss or corruption of files or data due to system failure

(7) assigning tasks associated with the installation and configuration of Server software to designated staff within the Office of Information Technology Services

(8) assigning tasks associated with the development and maintenance of applications, tools and utilities to designated staff within the Office of Information Technology Services

(9) creating appropriate user groups to facilitate the management of user accounts for Content Providers

(10) providing an environment where only authorised Content Providers may add, modify and delete files hosted on the Central MurdochNet Server used to provide a Content development environment

(11) ensuring that access to the process for copying files to the MurdochNet Host is restricted via the Murdoch Authentication & Identification System (MAIS)

(12) ensuring that access to the process of deleting Content from the MurdochNet Host is restricted to authorised staff responsible for the administration of MurdochNet, and when required, to Content Providers assigned the appropriate MAIS Authority Type code

(13) providing advice to Web Administrators on the selection, installation and configuration of Web Server software

(14) providing advice to Web Administrators on the use of Secure Servers and the process of registering a Server for a Digital ID/Certificate

(15) providing a program to monitor the availability of MurdochNet Servers and Affiliated Web Servers and to alert Web Administrators re Server problems

(16) providing a Server Registration System to be used in the registration process and authorisation process for Web Servers

(17)  providing a Web Server Alias Redirection Service to ensure that HTTP requests to secondary aliases are re-directed to the primary or preferred alias maintained in the University’s DNS

(18) liaising with staff responsible for the support of strategic application systems when such systems utilise a Web interface and require applications to be hosted on a Central MurdochNet Server

(19) providing application support for designated applications hosted on a Central MurdochNet Server.
