Section 4 SERVER MANAGEMENT

Section 4.5 Availability of Web Servers

Section 4.5.3 Priority Level for Web Server Availability

A priority level for availability shall be assigned to all Servers at the time they are registered. This level (high, medium, low, none) shall be used to determine whether a Server should be monitored for availability of the computer that runs the Server, the availability of the Server, and the accessibility of the Content hosted on or accessed by that Server. The priority level for availability shall also determine how frequently a Server is monitored. In some cases, the priority level (eg. high priority) may indicate the action to be taken when a monitored Server is found to be unavailable or its Content or service inaccessible. The action to be taken may include notifying the appropriate Head of Office when a Server is reported unavailable over an extended period of time, or repeatedly unavailable for short periods of time.

It is recommended that when a Server is assigned a high priority level of availability, certain requirements should be met by the organisation responsible for providing the Server. These requirements may include hardware and software standards (eg. age of hardware, maintenance contracts, UPS, multiple processors, multiple power supplies) and acceptable levels of technical support (eg. on call). In some cases (eg. Central MurdochNet Servers), an alternate physical computer host housed in alternate physical location may be a requirement of a Disaster Recovery & Service Continuity Strategy.
