Section 4.4 Naming Conventions for Web Servers

Section 4.4.4 Functions, Services, Applications, Systems or Publications Web Server Alias Naming Convention

The use a title of a function, service, application, system or publication as an alias without the standard prefix www is now an accepted practice, driven primarily by marketing and publicity concerns (eg. alumni.murdoch.edu.au; handbook.murdoch.edu.au; myinfo.murdoch.edu.au; proxy.murdoch.edu.au; webmail.murdoch.edu.au).

The agreed naming convention for functions, services, applications, systems or publications is:

  • the title of the function, service, application, system or publication in the format of title.murdoch.edu.au, eg. search.murdoch.edu.au

The preferred format for an alias assigned to a function, service, application, or system, shall be

title.murdoch.edu.au

This format shall also be applied to Servers run for a short term purposes such as competitions either run by the University, or in which the University is participating (eg. win.murdoch.edu.au, yam.murdoch.edu.au).

It is recommended that for the purposes of constructing aliases, the title of a function, service, application, system or publication should be treated as if it were a computer host on the murdoch.edu.au domain.

Requests to use an alternative format with the standard prefix of www and then the title of function, service, application, system or publication as if it were a sub-domain, shall be considered and approved if appropriate.
