Section 4.4 Naming Conventions for Web Servers

Section 4.4.2 Web Server Alias Redirection Service

To minimise problems related to more than one alias being associated with a Server and to keep record maintenance tasks to a minimum, it is recommended that only one alias, the preferred alias, be assigned to a Server.

However, as additional aliases may be unavoidable (eg. to accommodate organisation unit name changes and organisation restructure) it is recommended that a centrally-managed redirection service should be implemented.

In such situations, the preferred alias for a Server should be revised in the University’s DNS and the earlier alias (or aliases), should be included in the redirection service.

In some cases, an alias may cease to be associated with a Web Server. In these cases, if the Content has been relocated and a need for continuity of service is identified, the Web Server Alias Redirection Service should be used to redirect requests to an alternative Web Server alias.

Staff responsible for the administration of MurdochNet shall be responsible for developing and maintaining a Web Server Alias Redirection Service, and for liaising with other staff as required.
