Section 4.4.1 Aliases for Web Servers
The use of aliases is intended to:
- promote consistency in the format used for naming of
Servers associated with organisation units or resource areas, services,
functions, systems and applications
- facilitate the reorganisation of hardware and software
on the Murdoch University Network without impacting on the availability of
services (ie. Content can be relocated and the alias swapped to an alternate
computer host)
- ensure that Servers nominated for indexing by the
Campus Search Engine robot are only indexed once
- provide meaningful URLs for use in publicity for
Murdoch University services and publications
- allow for Virtual Servers to be easily associated with
Server software on a computer host.
Assigning aliases for use with Virtual Servers should be
encouraged as a method of facilitating the relocation of Content from one
computer host to another whilst allowing Links to persist.
