Section 4.3 Alternate Domain Names

Section 4.3.5 Registering an Alternate Domain Name

An application to use an alternate domain name with a computer on the Murdoch University Network may only be initiated by a staff member or student of Murdoch University.

(1) An applicant will first determine that their preferred alternate domain name is not already in use and then liaise with the Web Administrator of the Server to be used to host their site requesting assistance in obtaining approval from the Director, Office of Information Technology Services to use an alternate domain name

(2) The Web Administrator will liaise with Communications Services re use of the proposed alternate domain name

(3) Communication Services will first liaise with the Director, Office of Information Technology Services re the proposed alternate domain name and then advise the Web Administrator that it may be used

(4) The applicant shall then use the Server Registration System to initiate registration of an Affiliated Web Server

(5) The Web Administrator approves the association of the approved alternate domain name with an Affiliated Web Server run on a computer that he is responsible for and the system then sends notification of the registration request to the MurdochNet Coordinator

(6) The MurdochNet Coordinator then uses the System to forward the request to the Head of Division, or other member of the Senior Executive, as appropriate

(7) The nominated 'authoriser' receives an email alert with a URL for the Server Registration System

(8) The 'authoriser' logs into the System, views the registration details and is prompted to authorise the association of the alternate domain name with an Affiliated Web Server

(9) If a registration request is authorised, the System emails the Web Administrator, the Communications Services section and the applicant

(10) The applicant shall then register their approved alternate domain name with an accredited registration service

(11) Communications Services shall then use the Server registration details to add an entry into the University’s Domain Name Server (DNS). The DNS entry shall tie the authorised alternate domain name to an agreed IP address on the Murdoch University Network.

The University may choose to charge a fee to initiate and maintain alternate domain name entries in the University’s DNS.
