Section 4 SERVER MANAGEMENT

Section 4.1 Registration of Web Servers

Section 4.1.2 Server Registration Process

A Web Server may be setup for an organisation unit or a resource area by a Web Administrator. A computer host may run a Web Server and then have associated with that Server a number of Virtual Servers. The registration process shall apply to both types of Servers. A Web Administrator may be responsible for one or more Web Servers in their respective Division, School or Office, or they may manage Web Servers on behalf of other organisation units or resource areas.

The Web Server registration process shall include:

(1) Submission of a registration request by an applicant (either a Web Liaison Officer, or the person responsible for IT management, or a person responsible for the Content to be hosted on a Web Server) on behalf of an organisation unit or resource area, which is then forwarded to the Web Administrator who is/will be responsible for a Web Server run by or for an organisation unit or resource area, or

(2) Submission of a registration request by an applicant on behalf of a student club or society, which is then forwarded to the Web Administrator responsible for the Web Server run by a Division/School, or

(3) Submission of a registration request by an individual (staff, student or other person affiliated with, or recognised as being associated with the University) who

(a) runs an Individual Web Server on a computer provided for their use by a Division, School, Centre or Office

(b) will forward a completed application form to the Director, Office of Information Technology Services.

(4) Approval by the MurdochNet Coordinator of an alias assigned by the applicant to a Web Server. There shall be one alias in a preferred format that complies with an agreed naming convention. Additional aliases may be associated with a Server and managed via a Web Server Alias Redirection Service. An alias may use an approved Murdoch sub-domain. An alias may also use an Alternate Domain Name which has been approved by the Director, Office of Information Technology Services. Use of an approved alternate domain name in association with a Web Server, requires the approval of the Web Administrator responsible for the Server that will use the alternate domain name, and authorisation by a Head of Division.

(5) Review of a registration request by the MurdochNet Coordinator. Each Server shall use either port 80 or port 443, unless prior approval for use of another port has been obtained.

(6) Approval by a Head of Division (or their official nominee, eg. Head of School, Head of Office) of a Web Server registration request.

(7) Submission of an authorisation request for a Web Server to perform the role of an Internet Content Host.

(8) Authorisation by a Head of Division (or official nominee) of a request for a MurdochNet Server to perform the role of an Internet Content Host.

(9) In the case of a Server run on a computer managed by the Murdoch University Guild of Students, the Guild President shall authorise a request by a Web Administrator for the MurdochNet Server to perform the role of an Internet Content Host.

(10) In the case of a Server run on a Divisional or School computer host and run on behalf of a student club or society that is affiliated with the Guild, the Guild President shall also authorise requests for a MurdochNet Server to perform the role of Internet Content Host.

(11) Authorisation by a Head of Division of a request for an Affiliated Web Server to perform the role of an Internet Content Host.

(12) Notification of the Server registration details to the Communications Services section of the Office of Information Technology Services for inclusion of corresponding entries in the University’s Domain Name Server (DNS).

Server Registration records shall be maintained by staff responsible for the administration of MurdochNet. Maintenance shall include the updating of computer host and alias information. The maintenance of corresponding entries in the University’s Domain Name Server (DNS) shall be the responsibility of authorised staff in the Communications Services section of the Office of Information Technology Services.

Until the Server Registration System is implemented, registration of Affiliated Web Servers shall make use of an Affiliated Web Server Application Form as included in Schedule 1: Forms of this Policy. A form to be used to register a Web Server that is run on a computer that is not on the Murdoch University Network, is also included in Schedule 1: Forms. Completed forms should be forwarded to the MurdochNet Coordinator.
