Section 4.8 Web Server Software

Whilst the University is working toward minimizing the range of Web Server software in use, it acknowledges the need to maintain a number of software environments, run under different operating systems, to ensure that application systems acquired or developed for teaching, learning, research and administrative purposes, can be delivered via a Web interface.

In order to provide a reliable and consistent service to end-users of MurdochNet, all Web Server software installed on computers used to run MurdochNet Servers and Affiliated Web Servers should:

(i) Be installed and tested (preferably on a separate computer)

(ii) Be readily installed and set up

(iii) Be upgraded to new versions as appropriate

(iv) Receive security patches as and when advised by the IT Security Manager

(v) Be backed up appropriately

(vi) Provide an environment for setting up Virtual Servers

(vii) Use a Digital ID/Certificate when appropriate, to ensure encryption of confidential, sensitive or financial information

(viii) Allow for interaction with software applications, programs and databases

The person assigned the role of MurdochNet Administrator should be consulted by any other Web Administrator who requires advice on the selection of, or assistance in the installation of Web Server software.
