Section 4 SERVER MANAGEMENT

Section 4.5 Availability of Web Servers

Continuous Availability

MurdochNet should be accessible at all hours, all days of the year. To meet this level of service, the computers used to run MurdochNet Servers and Affiliated Web Servers, as well as other computers hosting content accessed by those Servers (eg. strategic databases), should be continuously available (ie. 24x7x365).

In order to meet the requirement for continuous availability, all MurdochNet Servers and Affiliated Web Servers used to host or provide access to University Content should have a Disaster Recovery & Service Continuity Strategy in place. It is recommended that such a strategy include the use of hardware and software solutions (eg. an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)) and other facilities such as alternate computer host in a separate physical location.

Exceptions

MurdochNet Servers that are used to host Associated Content, such as Individual Web Servers run by individuals (ie. staff, students and other persons formally affiliated with, or recognised as beingn associated with the University), shall be exempt from the requirement for continuous availability and use of a Disaster Recovery & Service Continuity Strategy. Servers run by the Guild and by student clubs and societies shall also be exempt from this requirement.

However, this exception should not apply to any such Servers that have been authorised to perform the role of an Internet Content Host.
