Minors

PREAMBLE

This Policy establishes a framework for the approval and governance of minors.

DEFINITION
Minors:

In undergraduate-level courses, a minor is a prescribed, academically coherent grouping of units that requires completion of fewer points than a major. A minor can be within or outside the area of a student's major and has the purpose of specialisation or diversification.

POLICY
1. The introduction of a minor requires approval by Academic Council in accordance with the relevant Academic Planning Guidelines.
2. The proposal of new minors must be in accordance with the Establishment of Courses, Majors, Minors and Units policy. An estimate of the number of enrolments and completions over the following five years must be provided.
3. A minor has a points value of between 11 and 19 points, including no more than 9 Part I points and at least 8 Part II points. At least 6 Part II points of a minor cannot be counted towards a major or another minor.
4. Information about minors should be included in enrolment information sent to all students. This allows students to make decisions about nominating minors as part of their degree at the earliest possible time.
5. Minors are to be monitored and reviewed annually as part of the Academic Planning process. Minors that have had less than 15 students complete over the last three years are to be flagged for discontinuation unless a rationale can be provided by the school to justify their continuance.
6. Completion of a minor shall be shown on a student's academic transcript provided the successful student has enrolled in the minor before completion of the degree.
