Award of University Medals

1.

Up to seven University Medals may be awarded each year for outstanding academic performance by undergraduate students. At least one Medal shall be awarded to a student from each Division, subject to there being candidates of sufficiently high calibre (an academic score of not less than 3.78).

2.

Medals are awarded to students who in that year completed an ordinary bachelor degree, or an honours degree which did not require an additional period of study than the ordinary degree. Students who complete the BSc in veterinary biology are only eligible if not proceeding to the BVMS.

3.

To be eligible, students must have completed at least 48 points of graded Murdoch University units, irrespective of the length of the degree. Students in graduate-entry bachelor degrees are eligible, provided the degree is at least 48 points.

4.

The Medals shall be awarded by Academic Council at its first meeting of the year, on the recommendation of the President of Council in conjunction with the Executive Deans.

5.

The Medals shall be awarded on the basis of an academic score. The weighting used is 4 for a HD or A, 3 for a D, 2.5 for a B, 2 for a Credit, 1 for a C or P, 0.8 for a CP and 0 for a N, with ungraded passes disregarded completely. This is multiplied by the points value of the unit, and the total divided by the total points in the degree. The maximum possible score is 4; usually a score of 3.875 or higher is required, though this is not mandatory.

6.

Both Part I and Part II units are considered; for BVMS and BEnvSc graduates, the units in the initial BSc are also counted. The academic score should take into account grades obtained in units undertaken at other institutions while enrolled as a student at Murdoch (cross enrolments), but not prior to enrolment at Murdoch. Where a Murdoch graduate completes a second or subsequent degree (other than a joint degree or BVMS), the academic score shall be calculated only on the grades obtained in that degree.

7.

Unit withdrawals will be disregarded. For veterinary students the grades obtained in the components of the year-long units are considered and weighted, based on their proportion of that unit.

8.

Award of the Medal shall be recorded on the student’s academic transcript, on an honour board and on the University website. Medallists shall also receive an engraved silver Medal with ribbon, and a cheque for $1,500.

Note:

Students in graduate-entry bachelor degrees are eligible, provided the degree is at least 48 points. The January 1999 meeting of Academic Council defeated a motion to exclude them.
