Dress Standard and Uniform Policy

Purpose

It is important to maintain a minimum standard of dress, and to mandate uniforms for Customer Facing IT Services staff to allow for easy identification.  This will also help to present a more efficient and organised image of IT Services to the University community.

The minimum provisions with regard to dress and mandated uniforms for IT Services staff are set out in the following policy.

Scope

This applies to IT Services staff at every Murdoch University campus.

Definitions

  1. Customer Facing” refers to Front Counter Telephone Staff (Chancellery) and IT Service Counter Staff who deal with customers on a day-to-day or regular basis.
  2. Dress” refers to the clothes that a staff member wears while at work.
  3. Uniform” refers to a style of dress that is mandated by the University.
  4. Compulsory” refers to mandated as required by their position.
  5. Non-Compulsory” refers to employees choice to wear designated “Compulsory” uniform, (colour of choice) such purchase cost to be borne by the employee.  Non-Compulsory is not to be mandated or monitored.
  6. Badge” refers to IT Services - Murdoch University approved style name badge.

Employee Responsibility

It is the responsibility of the employee at all times whilst dressed in the Murdoch University uniform to respect such uniform and to ensure clothing is laundered appropriately.

Employer Responsibility

  • To ensure staff member is appropriately dressed in uniform at all times.
  • To provide uniforms for staff where indicated compulsory.

  1. IT Services staff are expected to maintain a dress standard that is clean and neat.

    Uniform :

    • Tailored shirt, type Manhattan (per catalogue, LB8425 and SH840 – white with black pinstripe) –with Murdoch University logo embroidered on left side and IT Services” on right. – “Compulsory”.
    • Jumper (Black) WP6008– as required
    • Cardigan (Black) LC8008 – as required
    • Vest (Black) WV6007– as required
    • Name Badge – “Compulsory” Inscription  “IT Services” – Staff member’s Name (Surname optional)

    Other Apparel - no prescribed style but must be clean and neat (Recommended: dark coloured trousers - black or dark blue)

    IT Service Counter Staff

    Uniform :

    • Tailored shirt, type Manhattan (per catalogue, LB8425 and SH840 – white with black pinstripe) –with Murdoch University logo embroidered on left side and IT Services” on right. – “Compulsory”.
    • Jumper (Black) WP6008 or Cardigan LC8008– as required
    • Name Badge – “Compulsory” Inscription  “IT Services” – Staff member’s Name (Surname optional)

    Other Apparel - no prescribed style but must be clean and neat (Recommended: dark coloured trousers - black or dark blue)

    All other Staff

    Neat Dress.  

    The items below may be purchased (at own cost) and worn:

    • Tailored shirt, type Manhattan (per catalogue, LB8425 and SH840) – (colour of choice) –with Murdoch University logo embroidered on left side and IT Services” on right.
    • Jumper WP6008 (colour of choice)
    • Cardigan LC8008 (colour of choice)
    • Vest WV6007 (colour of choice)

    Name Badge –  Inscription  “IT Services” – Staff member’s Name (surname optional)
    Badge to be paid for by IT Services – if required.

  3. The cost of compulsory uniforms is to be borne by IT Services and is FBT exempt (under this policy).  The cost of replacement clothing for compulsory uniforms is to be borne by the staff member; this is tax deductible.  Staff purchases of non-compulsory clothing are tax deductible (personal tax returns) up to the value of $300 per year.  The cost of laundering this clothing is also tax deductible.
