Intermediate Awards

DEFINITION

Intermediate Award:
An approved interim postgraduate course, to officially acknowledge a student’s achievements whilst studying towards an enrolled higher degree. Intermediate awards allow students to take out a suite of awards when they graduate from an articulated higher degree. For example as a student progresses towards the requirements for a Masters degree they may meet the requirements of an articulating Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma. An intermediate award is official confirmation of completion of the specified required units, for an approved articulating award.

Articulated Award:

An articulated award provides a recognised pathway from one post-secondary qualification to another at the same or a higher level, and includes a formal arrangement about the granting of credit and exemptions.

Stand-alone Degree:
Not an articulated award.

POLICY

  1. An intermediate award is only available for approved articulating postgraduate coursework courses. It is not available for research based Masters or Doctoral courses.

  2. An intermediate award can only be awarded if the course has been approved as a stand-alone degree.

  3. Any course which is to be offered as a stand-alone or intermediate award must be approved by Academic Council on the recommendation of Academic Policy Committee. This must be done in line with Academic Planning Guidelines at that time.

  4. When creating an intermediate award it must not be of the same level as the principal award. For example a postgraduate diploma cannot be an intermediate award for another postgraduate diploma course.

  5. Admission into the higher level course shall be deemed to include admission into the lower level intermediate course.

  6. Students can exit from a higher level award and take out an intermediate lower level award if they have satisfied the course requirements of that lower level award.

  7. To be granted an interim award the academic requirements of the intermediate course must have been successfully completed. A student must complete at least one half of the total points with Murdoch Units.

  8. Students enrolled in an articulating lower level award (such as a Postgraduate Certificate) are permitted to progress into the corresponding Postgraduate Diploma and then Masters if they meet the approved admission requirements, with advanced standing being granted for the articulating lower level course.

  9. Students must be advised of the opportunity of taking out intermediate awards in all relevant University publications such as course brochures and handbooks.

  10. A student who elects to take out intermediate award(s) will have a statement to this effect on their academic transcript.

  11. Students who continue their enrolment without any break in their studies will not be entitled to graduate and receive their suite of awards until they have completed the higher level award.

  12. Students are entitled to attend only one graduation ceremony where they will be presented with a testamur for the highest level award. They will be provided with testamurs for each intermediate award on application after the ceremony.

  13. This policy is not retrospective and took effect from the date of its approval by Academic Council.
