Converting Units to the Flexible Model

Elements of a FLIC unit

  1. A single Unit Information and Learning Guide with summary generic study information as per the unit template
  1. The Unit Reader available in print form and maybe through ECMS (eReserve) in the Library
  1. Lectopia used for digital recording of face to face teaching which is then available online
  1. Further modifications to the unit materials to make better use of online capabilities

The process for converting a unit

Step 1

The aim is to have a single Unit Information and Learning Guide that serves all students and may include different instructions for internal and external students.

Use the summary generic information as shown in the Unit Information and Learning Guide template. The student's MyMurdoch page provides links to the generic study information.

If at this point the guide is less than 60 pages it can be converted to A5 format maximising savings of printing costs.

Step 2

Contact the Library to coordinate  availability of your unit reader (and other suitable unit materials) through the Library's Electronic Course Materials Service (ECMS).
Contact reserve@murdoch.edu.au or 9360 2745

Step 3

Provide access to Lectopia recordings via your online unit.

Units with external students will require Lectopia. Use Bookings in Lectopia (BiL) to request recordings.

Ensure instructions are included in your Unit Information and Learning Guide for equity students and external students who are unable to access the Lectopia system. They need to contact you to request a copy of the recordings.

Step 4

Moving to the flexible model is an opportunity to reassess the pedagogical approach of your unit. Modify the unit materials to provide essential information in the printed guide and complementary information online.

  1. Bring divergent unit materials into alignment (especially in relation to equivalent assessment for internal and external students).
  2. Move material such as additional assignment information and supplementary resources from the Unit Information and Learning Guide to your web pages. Instructions are available on "How to include your Unit Information and Learning Guide in a unit on LMS".
  3. You may wish to restructure your unit to take advantage of web resources and some of the interactive online features such as Discussion, Assessments and Assignments.

Target

By 2007, 90% of units will be offered flexibly as evidenced by having completed all the steps.
