Supporting our Uni

Philanthropy honoured at Thank You event

The Office of Advancement hosted the annual Donor Thank You Celebration at the Perth Arena on 12 October.

2017_thank_you.pngThe evening was the perfect opportunity to honour donors and VET Trust supporters, whose philanthropy provides life changing opportunities for students, aids pioneering research programs and enables the university to pursue its vision of excellence.

All those who spoke gave testimony to the power of philanthropy to bring change for good.

Dr Caroline Nilson spoke about her research in Indigenous health and nutrition thanking those who made it possible to develop research projects in collaboration with the Murray Districts Aboriginal Association Centre in Pinjarra. Their research findings have been presented at many state, national and international conferences over the past five years. The outcomes and community impact has influenced the development of health promotion activities in other communities.

As a lecturer in the discipline of nursing I use the knowledge I have acquired from these programs to support our nursing students to engage in culturally appropriate practices as they develop their therapeutic relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders”, she said.

Engineering student Bobbette Herold was the evening’s final speaker. Bobbette is undertaking a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) with a double major in Renewable Engineering and Electrical Power Engineering. Currently in the second year of her three year Newmont Kalyagool Kadadjiny Scholarship, Bobbette expressed her gratitude to Newmont, who enabled her to continue studying when she believed she had no choice but to return to full time work.

Soon after commencing her degree, Bobbette said she found a welcoming community when she joined the Kulbardi Aboriginal Centre.

The Centre taught me a lot about support and encouragement in a tertiary environment. It is like a family. It inspires me and I have learnt so much about my life as a student and how I am in a position to be able to help others”, she said.

Bobbette concluded the evening’s formalities with some words that encapsulated the whole spirit of the event.

On behalf of all of us recipients and students of the university, I would like to gracefully thank donors for giving us the opportunity to learn how to achieve our dreams and for teaching us the importance of giving”.
