Join us in support of the May Holman Prize in Politics

Date posted: 24 November 2016

Mary Alice "May" Holman - 18 July 1893 – 20 March 1939Murdoch University seeks your support towards establishing a new May Holman Prize in politics.

The prize will commemorate May Holman’s contributions to politics, promote knowledge of her significance to Western Australia and inspire women and girls to high achievement in the study and field of politics.

Throughout the 1930s May Holman was a household name and an inspiration to the women of her generation. She made history in 1925 when, at age thirty-one, she became Australia’s first female Labor parliamentarian, holding the WA seat of Forrest until her untimely death following an accident on the eve of the 1939 elections.

A woman who fought tirelessly for the rights of others, May Holman charted new territory for women, but the barriers she encountered and her methods of overcoming them still resonate today.

Our goal is to raise $25,000 which will fund an annual prize of $500 in perpetuity. More than $6,000 has already been received from generous donors.

The May Holman Prize in Politics is to be awarded for high academic achievement by a female student studying politics – either an Undergraduate Major in Politics or Honours in Politics.

Donations are tax deductible, please use the form or contact Murdoch University Foundation.
