Frequently Asked Questions

Are these courses flexible?

All of our courses are designed for busy professionals, so while we expect students to have a challenging and interesting on-campus learning experience, we have structured the teaching to accommodate the working lives of busy professionals, with most teaching in intensive formats on evenings, weekends, and sometimes in four day blocks.

We know that students at this level - mostly busy professionals – want and need opportunities to engage with others, to develop broader professional networks and to be stimulated and challenged by others working in similar occupations. So while we support our programs with online resources, our programs are offered in face to face formats, which we believe enhances the learning experience.

How do I apply?

I have submitted an online application. When and how will I receive my application outcome?

The Admissions Team will contact you via email as soon as they have viewed your application to confirm that they have all relevant documents to process your application. Formal offers into the course will begin being made from the first week of December.

Can I defer my place in a graduate course?

No. Students are not able to defer places in postgraduate programs so it is recommended that you apply for the semester in which you wish to commence your studies.

I uploaded electronic copies of my academic documents when I applied. Do I also need to provide hard copy versions of these documents?

No. If the Admissions team have any concerns regarding supporting documents they will contact you directly.

I will complete my current studies this year, therefore, I don't have my academic transcripts and final results yet. Can I apply without these?

Yes. You will then be able to submit your academic transcripts once you have graduated from your current degree.

How do I apply for Advanced Standing?

When you complete your application there will be a section on Advanced Standing that you will complete. Advanced Standing exemptions may be awarded on the basis of either prior academic study (completed at equivalent postgraduate level only) or relevant industry/professional work experience.

If you are seeking credit on the basis of prior academic study please provide a copy of your official academic transcript as well as the detailed unit outline/syllabus of the relevant prior postgraduate units you have completed.

If you are seeking credit on the basis of work experience please describe in at least 300 words how you have achieved the learning objectives and outcomes through your experience. Written referee letters must also be provided as evidence of your claims. You may also include other supporting documents such as your resume and position descriptions of relevant employment undertaken.

Yes, Masters degree students who elect to undertake a supervised research thesis as their Capstone experience may qualify for admission in to PHD programs.

Is there opportunity for an internship during my Masters Degree?

Yes. The Masters program concludes with a capstone experience where students may elect to complete a professional internship.

Do I have to complete an internship?

Each Masters degree concludes with the opportunity for students to undertake a supervised research thesis, a professional internship, or a work-based research project that examines a problem related to their own professional work.

Can I complete my internship overseas?

Yes. You can complete your internship in Australia or overseas.

Can I study subjects offered by other faculties as electives?

No. Students are required to choose electives from within the specific, chosen course. Each degree has a suite of policy electives that reflect our research strengths and that address pressing issues of the 21st century.

Will I be in classes with students from other disciplines?

No. These classes are specifically designed for postgraduate students studying in the Sir Walter Murdoch School as an exclusive cohort. This creates a powerful learning experience as it allows for an increased depth of learning and student engagement and interaction.

It has been a long time since I last studied at university. Do you have a cut off date where a previous degree is no longer counted?

No. You are able to use your previous degree indefinitely. However, you can only seek Advanced Standing for studies completed in the last ten years.
