Muffin Blueberry Smith

Nov 5, 1988 - May 14, 2008

Cheri and I picked her out together. She was chosen from the litter because she seemed and I quote Cheri here, “calm, sweet and demure”. Little did we know the little spitfire she would turn out to be! We went directly from the cattery in Alameda, CA to the pet supplies store where Muffin rode around like the princess she was inside my plush lined jacket with only her head poking out in the crisp Northern California air. From this vantage point she personally supervised the acquisition of her initial set of toys, her feeder and water dispenser, litter box, kitten chow and treats and even signed off on the scratching post. She became our son’s kitty that Christmas and part of the family. He named her Muffin Blueberry Smith because of her muffin colored fur and blueberry blue eyes.

Muffin has lived in a wide variety of places that include (in order):
Castro Valley, CA
Belmont, CA
Boca Raton, FL
Irvine, CA
Plano, TX
Hong Kong, China
Plano, TX (again)
and now, Heaven
Muffin was a very well traveled cat!

Although her personality definitely went through some changes over the course of her life (calmer as she got older, but never too calm!) she always had a strong personality and was tremendously social. She craved to be around people and, as was her right to do so as royalty, when surrounded by a crowd she regularly took charge and called the shots.

Some fun memories of Muffin for me include:

  • Learning that she picked apricots and brought them into the house, leaving them for us to find. We blamed our boys for doing this until one day we witnessed her actually in the tree harvesting.
  • No shopping bag with handles was safe in her presence. Set it on the ground for even a second and she’d nip right through the handle!
  • Getting voice mail while we were on our honeymoon in Australia from neighbors who were dismayed that Muffin, missing our companionship, had adopted them as her new family and was working hard to drive away their pre-existing (and now redundant) family cat.
  • Watching her establish the “proper” pecking order with other family pets; Maui, Zeus, Louisa and finally Yzma.
  • Watching her snuggle with family members.

Special thanks to our wonderful vet in Hong Kong, Dr. Lloyd Kenda, who took care of her in her later years.

In Loving Memory of Muffin,
Chuck Kinch and family
