Cassie’s (Sneath) Story

21 January 1993 – 31 July 2009
RIP

We picked Cassie from the Shenton Park Dogs Home in Perth in July 1997 but really it was more like she picked us. The first time we looked into those big brown eyes we were hooked. We worried about her travelling in the car but after taking her out on the lead she flew into the back seat, settled down and never looked back. We had an 8 year old cat Lucy at home and for the first month we never dared leave them alone together – fur was bound to fly and we weren’t sure who would win.

Fortunately they settled down and whilst not the best of friends Lucy tolerated Cassie who (we think) only wanted to make friends.

Cassie quickly became part of the family and loved having visitors, going for rides in the car and even being boarded while we were away. She was always spoilt rotten and at the Kennels had lots of privileges not given to other dogs. One kennel always let her play with the family goat as the two got on so well together.

In September 1999 we relocated to Point Turton, Yorke Peninsula, South Australia and Cassie coped with the road trip better than we did. She slept the whole way, learned to wee on command during rest stops and quickly learned to be very quiet so we could smuggle her into motels when there was a “No animals in rooms” policy. Very smart when Frank told her to behave or sleep in the car!!!

Cassie soon became well known around town and loved going for walks until her arthritis became too bad. She was usually found in the ute travelling with Frank and became “site supervisor” on many community projects. People loved to feed her (and she never knocked back a bite to eat) until we put her on a strict diet.

In the last couple of years she had been in the wars a bit and had a few operations usually more stressful for us – she seemed to cope quite well with the fantastic attention from our vet, Bev and all the staff.

In July 2009 Cassie started to deteriorate and although we could both see what was to come it was such a difficult decision to make. At sixteen and a half years it was time to say goodbye. It was a privilege to have had her for those 12 years. We would like to thank sincerely our vet Bev along with Rod, Chris and Nicole at the Corny Point Veterinary Clinic whose compassion and dedication helped us through the last ten years and at the end. Bev has made a donation to the Murdoch University Veterinary Trust in Cassie’s name and we thank her sincerely.

So sadly missed and never forgotten.

Sue and Frank Sneath and Lucy.
