Tommy Lehmann

Tommy chose to live with us in 1985 when he was about two years old. His sister had already lived with us for some time so with Tommy he made a family of four. He had a dreadful skin condition with fur falling out but soon with a good diet and some TLC he was a fine specimen of a cat. So much so that he actually reached the grand weight of 12 kilos. We were told he had a lot of Maine Coone in him which was part reason for the size.

We travelled to the country to live and all four cats obviously came with us and adapted well. By the year 2000 we were once again living in the city and Tommy was an ‘only child’ but had much loving with nurses and cuddles and sitting on our knees. He had regular visits to our Vets Beauty Salon where the girls bathed and groomed him. People used to laugh when I said Tommy was going for his ‘shampoo and set’ but he loved every minute of it never ever needing a sedative. As he grew older his ability to jump was quite reduced but he still wanted to sleep on the bed so needed to be lifted. He also had a mattress next to our bed and one in the bathroom so he could choose his daily resting spot.

He developed a thyroid problem when he was about 20, in 2003, and was very stressed about taking his medication, so our wonderful team of Veterinarians at St Francis did some research and found that we were able to have his medication dispensed in a cream to be applied to his ear. This was wonderful and was just part of the pampering at bedtime. All the girls at the Pharmacy where his special cream was compounded always asked after the ‘old boy’.

Losing our Tommy on 6th July this year broke our hearts. He had taught Emily and Socs, his new friends, some of his old tricks so we still know he is around. Life without our ‘gentle giant’ is very hard, we will always love him and miss him.

Our thanks go to St Francis Veterinary hospital for the wonderful team of caring and compassionate people they are and for making the donation to ‘Caring for Pets Fund’ in memory of Tommy.
