I never knew what it was that made me pick you from a pen of 6 little cocker pups, maybe because you were the only black pup, Or was it the way you came bounding up with that “pick me pick me” look on that sweet little cocker face. Was it you who chose me? Something about you told me we could spend a whole lot of very special time together.

I watched you grow into the special little dog you were to me and everyone who knew you. Always the class clown in your puppy pre -school classes. Somehow you managed to graduate with honors. What a joy it was to come home from work and be greeted by a cocker drunk with excitement, You would run and find something to bring me!! “My present for the day” a sock, a walking stick, a thong, a flower pot with its contents spilt the entire length of the house, anything that was handy would do. Then it was off to find one of your many tennis balls, aha… time to play. You regarded the tennis ball as the next best thing to the refrigerator that we humans ever made.

You loved all the long walks we often had and the summertime romps on the beach but by far nothing was better than a drive in the hot rod, even better if we stayed away the weekend. Even a visit to the vet was a momentous occasion, you would run and jump up onto the examination table and stand there as if to say “I’m ready.” (we both know it was the liver treats you were after).

At some point in time I’m sure you forgot you were a dog. This was never more apparent than when we would go down town for a coffee. Sitting on the pavement like all the other dogs was not for you, No you had to have your own chair and sit at the table preferably with one of those large Anzac cookies in front of you.

Nine wonderful years we shared. Always you gave more than you would take, even during your long illness that you fought so hard, your loyalty, loving and devotion always shone through. Till the morning when you were so ill that when I knelt beside you and said “You’ve had enough haven’t you little fella.” You found the strength to raise your head and lick my ear to say. “ Yes.”

I loved you enough to let you go.

A very special heartfelt thank you to both,
Dr Gabrielle Chadwick and everyone at Harradine Veterinary Clinic Bunbury.
Dr Ken Wyatt and staff at Murdoch Animal Cancer Care Unit.
For the caring and compassionate care given to a very special little black Cocker Spaniel.

John Hilliger.
