Montague and Sasha Cain

Memories

Black, curly Montague and blonde, smooth Sasha were both collected from dog pounds by Frances and her ex hubby. I used to visit them at weekends with my darling German Shepherd, Tora. Tora may well have been ancient by Montague and Sasha’s standards but they all played very well together and it took Tor the better part of the week to recover after our visit.

In 2003 after I had been seriously ill for ten months I moved in to stay with Frances and her delightful dogs at a nice place in the bush. I had now lost my GS but these two delightful dogs took me in hand. We began each day with a very long walk and because I really had no idea where we were Sash would eventually sit down and refuse to move until Montague and I returned to her. Then she would take off on a completely different path and lead us all home. What would we have done without her?

My health improved and the long walks continued, despite our several home moves, and they were both a pair of such delightful dogs. Sasha was refined and almost always detached, just watching what the rest of us got up to. Montague, on the other hand, was one stage away from humanity. Not only did he chat away to us but he participated in everything that was going on. Every now and again Montague would ‘attack’ Sash by playfully biting her ears and neck. They played for so long and then Sash ‘called it a day’.

We lost Sash unexpectedly on January 26, 2011 and one month later, on 27 February, we lost our Montague too. Could they not live without each other?

We are still trying to come to terms with life without them and it is very hard for both of us. We shall always miss them both terribly and are very thankful for all they did for us and gave to us – so much love on all sides.

What would we have done without the devout attention of Hugh and Mandy from Midland Vets. They both of them provided so much kindness and care on our regular visits, despite the fact that both Montague and Sash hated to visit them. Both dogs preferred to sit directly behind the door waiting for EXIT!!! Unfortunately neither of these vets were available on our very sad days but the two other vets we saw were so kind to us in our dreadful situation.

Both Frances and I are extremely grateful for all the care and attention we received from Midland Vets and their very kind staff.
