Blackie
Feb 2000-May 2008
You were found wandering along a road near Dardanup. Maybe you jumped out of a car, as you were wont to do - and that is how you ended up at the Bunbury Pound. We were looking for a Staffy and you filled the bill! You couldn't get out of that Pound quick enough. We had to name you - on the spur of the moment, looking at your colour, we called you Blackie. You adapted very quickly to our lifestyle, we were on holiday in Busselton in our caravan. Even with that stupid Elizabethan collar, you adapted to the confines of the caravan, even if we found it awkward.
When we took you home you soon bonded with Suzie the cat, even if the feeling was not mutual for some time. Your greatest joy was a ball. You would chase it all over the place – take it out in the car, to bed, on your morning walk, but you lost a couple when tied up at the shop and of course, when the ball rolled away down the road when you put it down.
You made friends easily but had mixed feelings about big black dogs. One large dog you liked was Zeus the Dalmatian. You had many happy days at his place and even had him as a boarder when his folks went away on holiday. Of course you came on many caravan holidays -Busselton, Albany. Esperance and Kalbarri. Your greatest joy was digging on the beach; luckily, you almost never dug at home.
We used to take you to an aged persons lodge to see Enid. The girls would take you on a tour to visit the other inmates, you seemed to know that you had to be quiet with the elderly, you even took Zeus a couple of times.
Your last holiday was special. You were ill in Esperance but came good after treatment. You waited until you got home before it became apparent that you had a serious problem.
Sadly, we had to let you go.
