Key questions in this research theme include:
- Can we improve our understanding of the mechanisms of disease and injury and develop improved methods for diagnostics and treatment through study of animal models?
- Can we apply knowledge obtained from animal models to improve diagnosis and management of disease and injury, and subsequently decrease mortality and suffering in patients?
- What are early-life origins and cellular mechanisms of respiratory inflammatory diseases such as allergic stress?
- How do the nervous and immune systems interact to promote and regulate inflammation?
- What biochemical pathways are modulated on binding of pharmacological ligands?
- What biochemical pathways are affected by acute and chronic exposure to pesticides in neurodegenerative diseases?
- Are complementary and alternative medicines safe, and to what level are they contaminated with pharmaceuticals, heavy metals and pesticides?
Our key approaches and tools include:
- Advanced molecular technologies- proteomics, metabolomics, next generation sequencing
- Field based research and population monitoring
- Local and international collaboration with world-leading research and industry partners
- Purpose-built surgical research facility
- State of the art surgical and diagnostic equipment (arthroscopy, laproscopy, computer tomography, endoscopy, fluoroscopy, ultrasonography)
- Advanced techniques in veterinary anaesthesia, analgesia and critical care
- Clinical specialists in surgery, medicine, oncology, critical care, diagnostic imaging and anaesthesia
