Current research projects in Ecology are listed below and are updated on a regular basis. For further information on one of those research topic areas, please do not hesitate to contact the relevant staff member .
Residual soil seed banks in high biodiversity sandplain shrublands -" is there a carry-over seed bank after fire (i.e. do someseeds remain dormant and wait for a subsequent fire before germinating?) and what are its attributes (what sorts of species, seed trait sets)? [One collection trip to field area required, then this is mostly a glasshouse-based project]
Germination responses of fire-cued species in relation to timing of winter and spring fires: are late winter fires bad for recruitment (project would suit mid-year entry) [Monthly trips to field area to set out and monitor seed batches. Possible replicate treatments at Murdoch also]
How successful have topsoil transfers been in urban offset restoration projects? Conduct field and secondary source work on past offset projects in the Perth region and evaluate why they have succeeded/failed and what lessons can be learned from this analysis.
