Chief Justice

Jeffrey Geoghegan is in his third year at Murdoch University and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Psychology. A keen advocate of mooting, he is actively involved in the Murdoch Student Law Society as a member of the 2006 Competitions Sub-Committee, and was the winner of the 2005 Mallesons Stephen Jaques Junior Mooting Competition. Jeff has also achieved success in his studies, receiving a Vice Chancellors Commendation for Academic Excellence in 2004.

Excutive Justice

Amy Smith is currently completing her third year of a Law/Psychology double major at Murdoch University. She has competed in Junior and Senior Mooting, trial advocacy, negotiations, debating, client interview, the plain english drafting competition, is a MSLS student mentor, has been an editor of E-Law, was Judge's Associate for ALSA and Senior Mooting, and recently helped organise the International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot. Her fields of interest include Evidence Law and Jurisprudence.

Associate Justice

Sarah Mateljan is currently studying her penultimate year of a double major in Law/Psychology. She has participated in many different law school competitions, including mooting, debating, trial advocacy and client interview. She also volunteers with the Murdoch Prospective Students Centre. Sarah is looking forward to working with the moot court bench to provide Murdoch Law students with exciting opportunities to participate in a broader range of mooting competitions, including national and international competitions.

ernest .jpgErnest Chua

Ernest Chua is current undertaking a double degree in law and commerce (majoring in finance). Currently an adjunct member of the Murdoch Student Law Society's education sub-committee, he can be found during semester working at the law help desk in the library. He practises a judicial decision making role outside university as a cricket umpire. All future career paths are still open.

renae .jpgRenae Mabey

Renae Mabey  is a penultimate year student studying a double degree in Law and Economics. In 2003 Renae received the Vice Chancellor's award for excellence and the award for Criminal Law, introduction to economics and the prize for the best first year economics student.
Renae’s is particularly interested in the potential areas of conflict between religion and the law. She has just completed a supervised legal research on the topic of the Priest-penitent privilege in evidence law and hopes to have this paper published in the near future. She also intends to do future research on the definition of religion in law and the history of law and religion.
Renae is very keen to see junior mooting become a vibrant competition at Murdoch University. She believes that a strong junior competition will set Murdoch up for future successes in the national and international mooting arena.

Jae McWilliams  has been involved in mooting since her first year at law school. Last year she appeared before His Honour Justice Ralph Simmonds at the Supreme Court of WA in the MSLS Mooting Grand Final, an exciting experience. Jae has also represented Murdoch Law School in the International Humanitarian Law Moot and says that ALSA provided a fantastic opportunity to meet people, to have fun and to see some world class mooters. Now in her final year, she says that participating in the Moot Court Bench Unit will give her the opportunity to sit on the other side of the bench, organise competitions and encourage others to get involved in mooting.

Andrea Hampton is currently in her penultimate year of the Graduate Bachelor of Laws program at Murdoch University. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Justice Studies and Business Law from Edith Cowan University. Andrea has a keen interest in criminal law and has clerked extensively for notable barristers, and is now looking forward to working for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in November. Andrea is also a tutor for the Equity Office of Murdoch University and a freelance classical piano instructor. She enjoys mooting and hopes that her position on the moot court bench will increase her understanding of court room advocacy and provide valuable experience for the future.

Greg Mackay is a Law/Politics student, in his penultimate year. He has competed in both the junior and the senior mooting competitions, and represented Murdoch Law School in the 2005 Tri-Law Moot and the 2006 Deans List Forum. He has also participated in the client interview and negotiation competitions. As a member of the Moot Court Bench, Greg hopes to build on Murdoch’s mooting reputation and expose more students to the benefits of competition.

Johanna Weaver is currently in her 4th year of a double degree in Law and Political and International Studies. She was the winner of the 2006 Freehills Senior Mooting Competition and was a member of the Murdoch Mooting Team at ALSA this year: finishing in the top 4 teams at the conference. Johanna is also part of the Murdoch’s 2006/07 Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot team and looks forward to developing Murdoch’s mooting reputation on an international scale.
With a particular interest in International Law, in 2005 Johanna participated in an exchange program to Uppsala University, Sweden, where she studied International Law and had many amazing and invaluable experiences.

Johanna is very excited to be a member to the Moot Court Bench and intends to use her time increasing the number and quality of students who participate in mooting by showing them that while mooting is intense and challenging it is also exhilarating, exciting and a lot of fun!

Sarah Robinson  is the Chief Justice of the Moot Court Bench for Semester 1, 2007. Within her studies, she is particularly interested in Constitutional Law and the Law of Evidence. Sarah is employed casually by Blake Dawson Waldron and enjoys working as a horse riding instructor on Saturday mornings. Sarah’s work on the Bench last semester involved scripting an educational mooting film for first year law students. Writing the film enabled Sarah to use her media skills to further her law degree. The film’s production is underway, with exceptional crew and talent working on the project. Sarah has been involved in producing, writing and directing short films as an aspect of her Media degree. Sarah and her crew were awarded third place in the SafeZone National Film Festival last year.

rebekah .jpgRebekah Poole

Rebekah Poole is currently completing her final year of Law/Asian Studies and brings a wealth of talent to the Moot Court Bench. An experienced mooter, Rebekah has five years senior mooting experience having reached the grand-final of the senior mooting competition twice and having represented Murdoch at both the ALSA and Red Cross IHL moots.

With a keen interest in both litigation and maritime law, she also brings much practical experience to the Bench as over the past few years she has worked as a law tutor and research assistant, run the Murdoch Legal Advice Centre, worked for two of the largest magic circle firms in London , and she is also a qualified sailing instructor.

Rebekah hopes the Moot Court Bench will help to foster a greater focus on the importance of advocacy skills for law students.
