13th International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot 2012 - Brisbane, Australia
News and Winners
Dear Colleagues and IMLAM Supporters
As organiser of the International Maritime Arbitration Moot, Murdoch University has been delighted to join with host Queensland University of Technology to run the competition in Brisbane from 6 – 10 July 2012. With the support of the international and local arbitrators, the competition saw 17 teams from 7 countries participate in 4 general rounds, with 41 moots being held over the space of 4 days. The teams who emerged with the best 8 rankings proceeded through to the finals.
The quarterfinalists were: University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, University of Southampton, City University of Hong Kong, National University Singapore, Murdoch University, Victoria University and Universitas Indonesia.
The semi-finalists were University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, Murdoch University and Victoria University.
The grand final was held in the Federal Court of Australia in Brisbane on 10 July before His Honour Justice Andrew Greenwood, David Martin-Clark (LMAA Arbitrator) and David Thomas (Partner, Minter Ellison). In an all Queensland affair, University of Queensland and Queensland University of Technology vied for the winner’s trophy, with University of Queensland proving victorious. The margin was extremely narrow, with one judge calling it a dead heat.
The competition was extremely well supported by the profession in Brisbane and indeed with visiting arbitrators travelling from overseas and interstate taking part. My thanks go to those arbitrators for their time and their professional dealings with the student teams, as well as the patient volunteers who judged the written memoranda of all teams. I am also extremely grateful for the generous financial support of MLAANZ (Queensland).
As ever, the standard of the competition was extremely high. The improving scores from round to round showed the students were applying the feedback they had received from the arbitrators in earlier rounds.
A number of prizes and trophies were awarded at the Awards Dinner last night. The following awards were made:

As Director of the IMLAM Moot, I would like to thank the many people who make this event both possible and pleasurable; the QUT student volunteers, our academic colleagues at QUT particularly Anne Matthew and Edwina Wong-See, the arbitrators and grand final judges, and of course the sponsors of the various prizes, and Chris Douglas for writing the moot problem. I also thank Miriam Everall who provided me with her usual excellent standard of support throughout this year. I also wish to thank the teams and their coaches; their enthusiasm, skill and good sportsmanship is a pleasure for all of us to observe. The moot seeks to give every student participant the opportunity to foster and improve their advocacy and knowledge of this fascinating area of law. This year, again, I believe it has lived up to that aim.
As announced at the awards dinner, we are delighted that University of Southampton has agreed to host the moot in 2013: the first time the moot has been held in Europe!
Best regards
Dr Kate Lewins
Moot Director
