12th International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot 2011 - Singapore

News and Winners

Dear Sponsors, Supporters, & Colleagues

12TH ANNUAL IMLAM COMPETITION – 2011 SINGAPORE

Murdoch University School of Law is proud to have organised the 12th annual IMLAM Competition, hosted by our colleagues at National University, Singapore. The event was a great success, with 18 teams competing. As ever, the students impressed the arbitrators with their level of preparation and mastery of both the law and advocacy.

After the general rounds, the top 8 teams progress to the quarterfinals. Those teams were:

  • University of Queensland
  • NLS India University, Bangalore
  • Queensland University of Technology
  • National University of Singapore
  • Murdoch University
  • University of Southampton University of Hong Kong
  • City University of Hong Kong

Notable in this list was the NLS India team; in their first year, with no coach and no tradition of maritime law at their university, they were extremely strong contenders in the oral rounds as well as winning a Memoranda prize.

University of Southampton and Murdoch University fought their way to the grand final, which was held in the fantastic arbitration facilities of Maxwell Chambers. The grand final was before the Hon Justice Judith Prakash, Justice of the Supreme Court of Singapore, Mr Lawrence Boo, head of The Arbitration Chambers Singapore and Mr Michael Pryles, Chairman, Singapore International Arbitration Centre.

In a close finish, the winning team of the oral rounds was Murdoch University.

The following prizes were presented at the awards dinner:

  • Winner, Oral hearings sponsored by Minter Ellison and Arbitration Chambers, Singapore – Murdoch University

A competition such as this cannot be run without significant support from the legal profession and the maritime industry. My thanks go to Peter Glover, of Norton Rose, spent many hours crafting the moot problem, which one arbitrator described as ‘devilish’. Thanks also to the grand final panel, all the arbitrators for giving of their time so generously (particularly those who travelled to Singapore for the occasion), Maxwell Chambers for providing the grand final venue, and the sponsors for providing the prizes to the teams. The anonymous judges of the memoranda perform a largely thankless task with good grace and a great deal of expertise. We must also thank the student helpers from NUS who acted as timekeepers and court officials for the 43 moots that took place, and the many other students and staff at NUS who ensured the event ran smoothly. My personal thanks go to Professor Girvin, Elizabeth Chua and Jake Ng for their impeccable organisation, and Miriam Everall, the IMLAM co-ordinator. All of these people were integral to the success of the event, which is indeed a team effort.

Photos of the competition, the grand final and the awards dinner will be posted on our website in the coming days; http://www.law.murdoch.edu.au/maritimemoot/index.html

I am thrilled to announce that in 2012, the IMLAM Competition will be hosted by Queensland University of Technology. Our thanks to our colleagues at QUT for agreeing to host the event. We look forward to another excellent competition in Brisbane next year!

My thanks to all of you for your support of this competition.
