News and Winners
11TH ANNUAL IMLAM COMPETITION – 2010 SYDNEY
National University of Singapore have emerged victorious in the oral rounds of the Eleventh Annual International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot, after defeating Murdoch University in the Grand Final on Tuesday, July 6.
After five general rounds, the field was narrowed to eight quarter-finalists - National University of Singapore, City University of Hong Kong, The University of Notre Dame Australia, Murdoch University, Queensland University of Technology, University of Technology Sydney, and the 2009 Grand Finalists, The University of Queensland and Universitas Indonesia.
The semi-finals saw Murdoch face off against QUT, and The University of Queensland against NUS, who qualified as the highest-ranking team in the general rounds.
The gripping Grand Final hearing was followed by the moot’s Awards Function, held at Zilver restaurant in Haymarket. The teams, their coaches, and a number of arbitrators who generously gave up their time to judge the competition, were in attendance. The Blake Dawson prize for the winners of the oral hearings, and the DLA Phillips Fox prize for the runners-up, were presented by the Grand Final panel President, Justice Allsop.

The Moot Director, Associate Professor Kate Lewins, expressed her thanks to the team of staff from the UTS Law Faculty, led by Associate Professor Sally Varnham, for their invaluable assistance with the organisation and hosting of the oral rounds; and also to the many UTS law students who volunteered their time as court officials. Associate Professor Lewins also gave her thanks to the many arbitrators who gave up their time, and in some cases travelled interstate and overseas, to help judge the competition. Associate Professor Lewins made special mention of Mr David Martin-Clark, a distinguished maritime arbitrator who has travelled from the UK to assist with the Moot for the tenth successive year.
The Informa prize for the competition’s Best Written Memoranda was awarded to The University of Sydney, participating in the Moot for the first time in over five years. The prize for the runner-up written memoranda was awarded to the University of Notre Dame Australia.
Other awards made on the night included the Sarah Derrington Achievement Award, won by the National Law University, Jodhpur; and the AMTAC Spirit of the Moot award, won by Ada Yeung of City University of Hong Kong, for her gracious and resolute performance under particularly fervent questioning by the panel in a general rounds hearing.
