9TH ANNUAL IMLAM COMPETITION – 2008 PERTH

Murdoch University School of Law is proud to have hosted and organised the 9th annual IMLAM competition. The event was a great success, with 17 teams competing, including a team from Texas, USA. The standard of the competition was, as always, extremely high. The students had clearly devoted an enormous amount of effort to their research and preparation, and their advocacy skills were incredible.

A competition such as this cannot be run without significant support from the legal profession and the maritime industry. Thanks must go to the grand final panel, all the arbitrators for giving of their time so generously (particularly those who travelled to Perth for the occasion), the Federal Court for providing the grand final venue, the sponsors for providing the prizes to the teams and sponsoring the many visiting arbitrators, and the Australian Maritime and Transport Arbitration Commission for sponsoring the opening function. The anonymous judges of the memoranda performed a largely thankless task with good grace and a great deal of expertise. We must also thank the student helpers who acted as timekeepers and court officials, and the Moot Court Bench students from Murdoch University who ensured the event ran smoothly. Likewise I would like to thank the Murdoch School of Law team of Dr Vernon Nase (Assistant Moot Director), Miriam Everall and Brigitte Russman.

All of these people were integral to the success of the event.

In 2009, the Competition will be hosted by the University of Queensland in Brisbane and organised by Murdoch University School of Law.

We all look forward to another excellent competition!
