An introduction to Energy Studies and Renewable Energy Engineering

There's an ever increasing demand for the integration of renewable energy into the current energy supply sector due to climate change, growing world populations and limited fossil fuel resources. Renewable energy is now at the nucleus of every discussion concerning energy, security, affordability and sustainability.

Policy changes, technological advances, and an increased awareness of the world's resources are creating a growing need across the world for advanced expertise in renewable and sustainability systems. Now more than ever, it's critical to prepare professionals to serve as leaders of the emerging "green" economy.

Degrees related to Energy Studies

Undergraduate Degrees

The main undergraduate degree related to Energy Studies is the Renewable Energy Engineering major within the electrical engineering branch of the Bachelor of Engineering Honours. To broaden their skill base and attractiveness to potential employers, students often undertake a double major and combine the Renewable Energy Engineering major with either a major in Electrical Power Engineering or Instrumentation and Control Engineering. A separate option altogether, which also contains some units related to energy, is the Environmental Engineering Honours within the chemical engineering branch of the Bachelor of Engineering Honours.

Electrical Power Engineering

This four year Bachelor degree provides you with the cutting edge skills to confront climate change. You will learn about the design, uses and implementation of renewable energy technology with a focus on electricity generation. You will learn about the availability and distribution of renewable energy resources, and will get hands-on experience in the implementation and design of working systems through the use of simulation programs. You will also gain real life industry skills through work experience, as well as having access to the best renewable energy research facilities in Australia.

This degree provides you with the skills to meet the electrical supply demands of the modern world. You will learn to construct low cost and reliable power plants that meet supply demands. Along with traditional forms of power generation, you'll focus on the generation and distribution of electricity from other sources, including thermal, nuclear, hydro, solar, fuel cells and wind. You will also gain essential practical hands on skills through the required 500 hours approved work experience.

Instrumentation and Control Engineering

Environmental Engineering

This degree concerns the study of the methods and technologies for controlling a range of manufacturing and industrial processes. Instrumentation and control of energy systems, to improve their performance and efficiency, is also covered. Emphasis is placed on the use of industrial standard laboratory facilities and the design and implementation of industrial control systems. You will also gain essential practical hands on skills through the required 500 hours approved work experience.

Master of Renewable and Sustainable Energy

Graduate Diploma in Energy and Carbon Studies

This is a two year course offers advanced training in the area of renewable and sustainable energy systems, sustainable energy policy, energy efficiency and carbon management.  The first year is the Graduate Diploma in Energy and Carbon Studies or the Graduate Diploma in Energy and the Environment.  In the second year the students will complete a research dissertation, in the areas of renewable and sustainable energy or the areas of climate change mitigation and adaptation.

This qualification allows you to specialise in:

  • Renewable Energy Systems
  • Energy Efficiency

You will gain practical experience and learn from experts from the Murdoch University Energy Research and Innovation Group (MUERI), plus undertake a research dissertation in an area you're passionate about.

Graduate Diploma in Energy and the Environment

Graduate Certificate in Energy and Carbon Studies

This diploma is directed to the interface between energy and carbon studies and environmental impact assessment and is intended to provide graduate training for Australian and international professionals working, or wishing to work, in the areas of climate change management or sustainable energy and environmental management.

There are two specialisations in this Diploma:

  • Climate Change Management
  • Energy, Emissions and Environment

The Climate Change Management Specialisation is designed in collaboration with industry to address the deman for professional with climage change skills across Australia and the Asia Pacifice region.

The Energy, Emissions and Environment Specialisation is specifically targeted to address the ongoing demand for the use of sustainable energy and the need for environmental management of such projects.

This program is available fully online and can also provide you with a clear pathway to the final year of the Master of Renewable and Sustainable Energy degree.

The Australian Institute of Energy Domestic Student Scholarships

Each semester the Perth Branch of the Australian Institute of Energy (AIE) offer a one-off scholarship worth $3000 for the duration of the study.

It is expected that the scholarship holder will attend AIE events and network with industry through the Young Energy Professionals (YEP) Perth group of the AIE. For this reason the student must be internal (studying on-campus) and be less than 30 years of age.

Dr. Manickam Minakshi from Murdoch University has developed a sodium-ion battery which solves one of sustainable energy’s greatest challenges of power storage for use in non-generation times.

The water\-based sodium\-ion battery has shown excellent potential for affordable, low-temperature, environmentally friendly energy storage.
