PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS

SCHOOL OF EDUCATION SUMMER SCHOOL

Develop professional expertise and have the option to build your qualifications through a range of professional development short courses, designed to meet the contemporary needs of the education sector and those working within it. Upon completion, all participants will receive a certification of attendance in accordance with the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership's (AITSL) Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (Standard 6: Engage in Professional Learning).

NOTE: Students may also enrol and attend these short courses.

Delivered by professional practitioners and leading academics, the suite of short courses being offered as part of Murdoch School of Education's Summer School 2019 include:

Teaching Students with High Incidence Disabilities

This three day course will provide an overview of the nature and characteristics of children with mild disabilities and examples of evidence-based practices and teaching strategies, specifically for children with:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Mild intellectual disabilities
  • Learning disabilities
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Emotional or behavioural disorders

6 Hour Tools for Teachers

This six hour workshop will empower you with basic principles, tools, and practice teaching experiences to integrate short chair yoga breaks with children or teens. You will learn chair yoga tools to promote health, learning, and achievement.

Through interactive practice teaching and feedback activities, you will gain confidence in identifying challenging times during your child’s or teen’s day and successfully utilising yoga tools to shift them into a more positive state of mind.

You will graduate from this workshop with the understanding and confidence to share chair yoga tools with the children or teens in your life.

Objectives:

  • Understand the goals and benefits of chair yoga.
  • Utilise chair yoga as a resource for to support children’s or teens’ health, learning, and achievement.
  • Utilise chair yoga as a resource for your health and wellness.
  • Recognise learning ready states and understand how to use yoga to access them.
  • Support brain based learning and social emotional learning through chair yoga tools.
  • Teach chair yoga breathing exercises, poses, games and relaxation.
  • Create and sequence 5 to 15 minute yoga breaks for your day.
