Promoting sustainability through social marketing and behaviour change: Our students helping out at Chris Ferreira’s sustainable demonstration home, 2017

Consumers are increasingly expecting/demanding that businesses and government organisations demonstrate that they’re acting sustainably, by protecting human rights, conserving the environment and behaving ethically. Business Week has indeed emphasised that sustainability is now "right at the top of the agendas" of successful companies. Businesses must increasingly comply with regulations governing their environmental and social performance, such as laws relating to their climate change impacts. Going beyond compliance, there is an awareness that 'thinking and being greener' can bring 'green dividends', enhancing businesses' reputations and brands, building customer loyalty and boosting profits. More businesses are also realising that there are now huge opportunities to increase profits by creating greener, more innovative products and services. Businesses, from the largest corporations to the nimblest start-ups and micro-enterprises, are seeking out such opportunities in what has been described as a 'green gold rush'.
At the same time, people who are passionate about creating a more sustainable future are realising that some of the most positive changes come about when we change our behaviour – and start recycling and using ethical, energy-efficient and water-wise products. This means that expertise in social marketing and behaviour change programs are increasingly important.
The Marketing + Sustainable Development double major brings together these increasingly in-demand skillsets, and opens up opportunities within a wide range of businesses, government agencies and not-for-profit organisations. For graduates with marketing and sustainability skills, there are also exciting opportunities for entrepreneurship and establishing new green businesses.
