Collaborating for Success:
Enhancing the Transition of Chinese Students into Australian Postgraduate Education

This collaborative project which ran between 2013 and 2015 aimed to address the following key questions in order to assist Chinese students to transition successfully into postgraduate coursework studies in communication and media in Australia.

  • How can lecturers in China and Australia most effectively prepare Chinese students for postgraduate learning in Australia?
  • How are media and communication students taught in China and how does this compare with Australia?
  • What does it mean to be a successful student in China and how does that compare with Australia?
  • What challenges do Chinese students experience transitioning from study in China to postgraduate coursework in Australia?

The project investigated the tertiary teaching and learning environments in China and Australia, including the learning experiences of Chinese students in both countries. Findings from the research informed the development of teaching strategies and learning resources for use by lecturers teaching cohorts that include Chinese students studying in Australia and China.
