Kirby Annual Human Rights Forum

Kirby Annual Human Rights Forum

The Honourable Michael Kirby is set to discuss the need for a bill of rights just as the Commonwealth Government considers the final report on a national consultation about protection and promotion of human rights in Australia.

Hon. Kirby, former Justice in the High Court - and Australia’s longest serving judge - will be giving the inaugural speech at Murdoch University for the launch of an annual event carrying his name, the Michael D Kirby Annual Human Rights Forum.

He will be reflecting on the continuing opposition which makes us stand alone among Western liberal societies without the full legal protection of human rights by asking the straightforward question: Why not protect human rights in Australia?

Instead of arguing that Australia needs a bill of rights, the Hon. Kirby will consider the contrary views that maintain the country doesn’t need laws to protect human rights.

The Michael D Kirby Annual Human Rights Forum seeks to promote a greater awareness of the continuing evolution and current state of human rights in Australia and globally by addressing some of their most controversial and misunderstood aspects.

Each year a prominent international figure will be welcomed to present thought-provoking perspectives on human rights, followed by a question and answer session with Murdoch University staff, students and others.
