Flexible study option – studying as an external student Murdoch is focused on providing flexible study options to all of our students. We have a range of both undergraduate and postgraduate courses that are available through external study or distance education. Allowing you to study in the way that best suits you and your lifestyle. Who is it suitable for: External studies or distance education is designed for students who may not find it convenient to attend classes. This means that as a student you will need to be self motivated and have the ability to set aside time for your studies. It is also important to understand that if you are thinking of studying externally, generally it is because of other commitments you may have, like family or work, so it is advisable that you study part time so you don’t take on too much at once. All of our courses that are available either partially or fully externally meet the same learning objectives of any internal study or are identical irrespective of whether you are studying internally or externally. Meaning you get the same learning opportunities as an on-campus student but in a way that is convenient for you. You can find out if the course you are interested in studying is available externally by checking the “Details” section of your preferred course in the Courses section of our website. How does studying externally work? All external study is coordinated by our External Studies Office which would be your central point of contact once you are enrolled as an external studies student. Apart from monitoring assignments and mailing unit materials, the External Studies staff can answer general queries or act as a point for reference if you are unsure of who to contact. If you are undertaking any or all of your course units externally you will be mailed unit materials two weeks prior to the start of each teaching period. The pack will include a Unit Information and Learning Guide and a letter which provides key information you need to get started. There may also be additional materials such as a reader or lab manual if applicable.
