International Discoverers' Scholarship Scheme for 2012
The International Discovers' Scholarship Scheme is designed to make study at Murdoch University more affordable in the current economic climate.
Murdoch University would like to ensure that in uncertain global economic times, where never seen before currency fluctuations are taking place, that an international education experience is made more affordable for prospective international students.
The scholarship scheme applies to a wide range of Murdoch courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. Depending on the course selected, the scheme allows for a reduction in annual course fees, by between AUD $500 and AUD $5,500.
Part scholarships are available to all students who apply for entry into an eligible undergraduate, postgraduate or study abroad program at Murdoch University for commencement in either semester one or two in 2012. The scholarship will be applied to the annual published course fee for the duration of the degree.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Does this scheme apply to Study Abroad students?
Yes, the scholarship does apply to the Murdoch University Study Abroad program with a scholarship amount of AUD $500 per semester for commencement in 2012 applicable.
- How was the Scholarship amount worked out, as the scholarship amount varies greatly between courses?
By making a comparison with the amount of funding that the University receives from the Australian Government for each domestic student enrolled in these courses, and the amount of money that it actually costs Murdoch to teach each of the courses.
- Is this a one- off scheme? Will it be offered again for commencement in 2013?
At this point in time the scholarship scheme aims to redress the increased cost of a student coming onshore to Australia. Depending on the value of the Australian dollar the University will reconsider the scheme for 2013. At this point in time the Scholarship scheme only applies to commencements in 2012.
- Who is eligible for this scholarship? If it is being offered to everyone, why is it called a "Scholarship"? The definition of a "scholarship" varies quite significantly. Most commonly a scholarship is referred to in the context of being merit based, needs based, or career based. At Murdoch University we have decided to introduce a scholarship which directly addresses the sudden increase in cost of living for international students due to currency fluctuations.
- This scheme currently applies to 2012 new commencement. Is it for both Semester 1 and 2, 2012 commencement?
The scholarship is designed for students who commence in either Semester One or Two in the calendar year of 2012. Unfortunately commencement outside of one of these periods will make the scholarship null and void.
- What about current packaged offers from pathway Providers due to commence in Feb 2012? Does this scheme apply?
Yes, students with package offers who commence in 2012 are eligible for the Scholarship.
- Does this scheme apply to students holding an existing offer (prior to announcement of this scheme) from MU to commence in 2012?
Yes it does, as well as applying to students who may have deferred an offer for a previous period (in the past 12 months). Please contact the relevant admissions officer (details are on the existing offer letter) for new offer.
- Is this scholarship available for the full duration of the course?
Yes, the scholarship will remain for the duration of the course commenced and will be subject to normal conditions, please see the offer letter for details.
- Will the tuition fees still be increasing on a yearly basis and how does this apply to the scholarship scheme?
The University does reserve the right to increase fees annually, however the scholarship scheme will continue throughout the duration of the course commenced in 2012.
- Why are current students are not offered this scholarship scheme?
The Murdoch International Scholarship Scheme is designed to directly assist students who may be affected by the current value of the Australian dollar. Murdoch University acknowledges students currently at the University may also be impacted by the current value of the Australian dollar. For this reason and in acknowledging students who may already be onshore, the University has decided to not increase fees by indexation, as is usual, for 2012. This applies to all current international students studying at the South Street, Rockingham and Peel campuses.
- I have overpaid my fees, how do I obtain a refund?
For overpayment amounts Murdoch University will roll over the balance to future tuition fees and overpayment amount remaining at graduation will be refunded.
- Can I have the scholarship amount paid to me in cash?
No, the scholarship amount is applied directly to the standard tuition fee for that course in 2012.
