Deciding what to study
Some people know what they want to do from an early age. Others like to move from one thing to another until they discover what suits them best.
So don’t feel you have to decide now what you want to be doing in 10 years time. Jobs and careers can change and grow, you may end up in a job that hasn't even been created yet!
When you’re choosing a course to study at university, the most important question you can ask yourself is ‘what do I most enjoy?’.
So grab a pen, and make a list of your likes and dislikes.
Now, chew the end of your pen awhile, and ask yourself ‘what’s important to me?’ Do you have a clear career path in mind, or a dream job you’re determined to work in? Write them down.
Now, how do you make those goals a reality - or find a job that will satisfy your dreams?
Start by concentrating on studying in areas that you enjoy, and you’ll be halfway there (there’s no point plotting out a career or study path you don’t enjoy because if you don’t enjoy the study you definitely won’t like the job at the end of it).
The biggest goal in all of this is for you is to be happy, and this means studying and working in fields you enjoy, find satisfying and that challenge you in the right ways.
The more information and knowledge you have, the easier it will be to make a decision about what you want to do. If you're really struggling, cross off everything you don't like so the list is a little shorter.
Read the booklets and prospectus you have been given; they’re designed to help you find out everything you need to know - and to help you make these decisions. So ask lots of questions!
