Finding time to study
The benefits of postgraduate study can be amazing – and fitting study into your life might be easier than you think.
We understand you need to fit study around your work and family commitments, so we offer various modes of study for most courses. The options available to you will depend on the course you choose, but a lot of courses have been designed to offer:
- Full time or part time options – more than 80% of our postgrad students study a part time load. For many courses, you can commit to just one unit per semester if that works for you.
- Convenient class times – many classes are scheduled in the evening to suit students who work full time or need to organise childcare.
- External study – you’ll receive the materials you need and you'll be able to access class notes online. You can also listen to lectures online, getting the benefits of classes without being on campus.
Even getting to Murdoch won’t take much time. Our South Street campus is only 15 minutes by train or 20 minutes by car from central Perth.
How much time do you need to study?
A good rule of thumb... Allocate 10 hours per week per unit - this includes classes, personal study, research and work on assignments.
Adjusting to life at uni
We offer a range of services to help make the transition to uni easy:
- Our Student Learning Centre hosts free courses in time management, getting organised and studying effectively. These courses help you make the most of your time, which can be really helpful when you’re switching back to a student mindset after not studying for a while.
- You can use our 24-hour library learning common and computer labs when you need to, not just during teaching hours.
- We have a Childcare Centre on campus if you need to fit your studies around your children.
