High school maths adds up at our Rockingham campus

Over the last five years, the number of Year 11 and 12 students completing maths subjects has been dropping steadily. Add this to a shortage in teachers and you can see how it’s been extremely difficult for high schools in the Rockingham area to run certain high level maths units.

To help out, we’re hosting a Year 11 specialist maths course at our Rockingham Campus, where students will attend maths classes run by local teacher Fiona Lewis with special offerings from Murdoch education and mathematics academics.

The project was the brainwave of a group of school principals in Safety Bay, Rockingham, Comet Bay, Gilmore and Warnbro (known collectively as the Parent Alliance Curriculum & Teaching, or PACT).

Our own Professor Andrew Taggart, Faculty Dean Arts and Education, welcomed teachers, parents, maths students and other members of Murdoch staff to campus at the project’s launch on 27 October.

Housing this course at Murdoch Rockingham continues to demonstrate our commitment to the region. The School of Education is building partnerships with local schools, and encouraging high school leavers to participate in higher education,” said Professor Taggart.

“As well as providing a central point for maths students to learn, the specialist maths course means students aren’t limited with their maths options. Students will be able to make the most of advanced online support – and get a taste for life on a university campus.”
