About Games Technology (BSc)

“See Mum, I told you all those hours of RPG’ing were an integral part of my study plan!” The best way to succeed is to love what you do and do what you love. With a global value of over $50 billion the gaming industry is estimated to now be worth more than the film industry. If you’re looking for a career combining creativity and technical IT skills with an international focus that will let you work anywhere in the world then this is the degree for you.

Studying Games Technology at Murdoch will give you a thorough understanding of the theory, design and programming techniques required for producing all kinds of software, not just games. You’ll look at general programming, graphics, artificial intelligence, games design, virtual reality, multi-user games programming and advanced games production using games specific software tools and object-orientated programming languages.

What can I do with my Games Technology degree?

Excellent career opportunities exist in the rapidly expanding games industry, both locally and internationally. Graduates will also find employment in many other areas of Information Technology. Computer animation and modelling are being used in more and more industries, from the mining sector right through to medical research and development so the future applications for this technology are constantly growing.

The following are just some of the careers you could consider:

  • Software Tester;
  • Software Developer;
  • Games Programmer;
  • Games Designer.

Professional Recognition

Graduates of this degree are eligible for membership to the Australian Computer Society at the Professional Level.

Core Units

You must take these units for a particular major to gain a specialisation in this area.

  • Introduction to Computer Science
  • Principles of Computer Science
  • Fundamentals of Computer Systems
  • Introduction to 3-D Graphics and Animation
  • Introduction to Data Communications
  • Computational Mathematics

General Electives

You must take these units to have enough units to graduate. General Electives give you the flexibility to learn from a variety of different areas. Select one unit offered by the University, subject to individual unit prerequisites.

Suggested double majors:

To take a double major, students simply take the core units from another major in place of their general elective units. Further details on double majors are available in the Prospectus. Some recommended double majors are:

  • Computer Science;
  • Internetworking & Security;
