About Early Childhood and Primary Education (BEd)
Have you always wanted to work with children? Teaching is one of the most rewarding and challenging careers. Everyone has a teacher they remember, someone who really helped them to succeed – the key is, do you think that you could be that person for others?
Our Early Childhood and Primary Education degree can give you the skills to become that teacher. It also provides you with the flexibility to teacher across a number of year groups, from Kindergarten to Year 7. This gives you a great deal of flexibility whether you are working with students of varying abilities or looking to move around within your school.
What can I do with my Early Childhood and Primary Education degree?
This course is designed to train you to become a teacher who has the background to teach children across the full spectrum of primary education from kindergarten and pre-primary to year 7.
The course is recognised by the Western Australian College of Teaching (WACOT), allowing you to register to teach in WA. You can also seek registration with the relevant authorities across Australia.
You can pursue employment with a range of employers including government and independent kindergarten/pre-primary and primary schools. You may also wish to pursue a role in a range of other occupations such as education officer positions, education designer, evaluation consultant, project coordinator, or training and development specialists. You may wish to take advantage of shortages within the growing childcare industry and seek a role that allows you to utilise your skills and knowledge.

Recommended subjects:
We don’t have prerequisite subjects for any of our courses as we are a strong promoter of a well rounded education. However, remember that you will also need to demonstrate competence in English, normally through passing either English or English Literature or by getting a sufficiently high score in ESL.
Course Structure
Year 1
Foundation Unit
All new first year students take a Foundation Unit. These are designed so you have some idea what’s going on, because, let’s face it, you’ve never been to uni before!
Core Units
You must take these units for a particular major to gain a specialisation in this area.

General Electives
Select two units offered by the University, subject to individual unit prerequisites.

As a Murdoch Education graduate, your prospects within the primary and secondary school teaching professions are excellent. Although your Murdoch degree will lead you towards plenty of work and study opportunities in the field of teaching, you are not absolutely confined to it.
