Career options
As a Murdoch Security, Terrorism and Counterterrorism Studies graduate, your employment outlook is bright, especially if you combine it with other disciplines. Depending on which skill combinations or specialisations you have, your Murdoch degree may lead you towards work and study opportunities in a number of areas. The following are some professions to consider, including majors that will improve your prospects of achieving them.
Security Analyst
In today's inter-connected and globalised world, many public and private organisations require security analysts who can collect information from a variety of sources and can then provide a well-organised and articulated analysis based on that information. Such analysis could be about the security situations in particular countries and regions and the opportunities and risks that may pose for private corporations and business. Analysis could be about possibilities for terrorist strikes or potential for conflict in a certain area. Analysts could also be used to provide periodic feedback about political, economic, social and military trends in countries or regions. In other words, most private and public organisations these days carry out in-house research and analysis of the kind of issues, countries and regions that they deal with as part of their core business; with this kind of analysis organisations can make better decisions. Your degree would provide you with the tools needed to find employment as a security analyst in either private or public organisations.
Security Specialist
Another option that you may have upon graduation is to find work as a Security Specialist with a private or public organisation. Security Specialists, particularly those with a knowledge of cyber-security, could help to manage the security of an organisation's system infrastructure, investigate and resolve incidents, monitor for intrusions, provide virus protection defences, enforce bandwidth policy, monitor data transactions in and out of a network environment and secure all servers from unauthorised use.
Correctional Treatment Specialist
In jails and prisons, Correctional Treatment Specialists evaluate the progress of inmates. They also work with inmates, probation officers, and other agencies to develop parole and release plans. Their case reports are provided to the appropriate parole board when their clients are eligible for release. In addition, they plan education and training programs to improve offenders job skills and provide them with coping, anger management, and drug and sexual abuse counselling either individually or in groups. They usually write treatment plans and summaries for each client. Correctional Treatment specialists working in parole and probation agencies perform many of the same duties as their counterparts who work in correctional institutions.
State and Federal Law Enforcement, Intelligence and Border Management Agencies
A degree in Security, Terrorism and Counterterrorism Studies would make you eligible for a career in law enforcement, border management and intelligence, both at the State and Federal levels. The threat of terrorism against Australian people and assets in Australia as well as in foreign lands is a major security concern. To meet this challenge head on, Australia law enforcement, border management and intelligence organisations require to recruit personnel with good knowledge of security and terrorism issues. Entry into these organisations is usually very competitive and requires successfully completing several stages of selection. The knowledge that you will gain from your course will be useful to you if you decide to apply for these challenging positions.
