Isobel's story
Isobel is completing a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Philosophy and History. Isobel chose this combination for her studies because she is interested in using her love and knowledge of philosophy to teach in the new Philosophy and Ethics curriculum in secondary schools in Western Australia.
She explains:
"Philosophy is important in secondary as well as tertiary education because it develops students' systematic thinking skills, so they are able to read more critically, write more precisely, and analyse situations more methodically.
These skills are valuable in all academic work, many occupations, and life in general. The study of philosophy also gives students a deeper historical understanding of the pursuit of knowledge, of how all strands of inquiry stem from philosophy.
I was originally planning a major in mathematics, with only a minor in ethics, but the passion units such as Moral and Political Philosophy, Ethics in Practice, and Love and Friendship ignited in me soon precluded relegating my study of philosophy to a minor."
