Meet Sarah Corbyn.
Sarah was born in London and moved to Perth in 2000 after living in Zimbabwe and Papua New Guinea.
She studied pharmacy for a year at another university, but soon realised that the course wasn’t for her, so she decided to try something different at Murdoch.
Sarah is a recent graduate from a Bachelor of Instrumentation and Control Engineering and Renewable Energy Engineering.
We asked Sarah to share some thoughts on her experience at Murdoch.
Sarah, tell us about…
-
How you managed to fit in a double major!
"With most combinations, the two majors really add value to each other.
For example, if you want to study Renewable Energy Engineering, choosing Electrical Power as another major will give you added knowledge about how Renewable resources are integrated into power systems – giving you a really strong background for a career in the renewable industry.
The engineering course at Murdoch is structured so that it’s really easy to do a double major."
-
How practical work has helped you to understand the theory behind the practice:
"It is one thing to sit in a lecture and learn out of a textbook, a completely different thing to actually take that knowledge and see it applied in real life.
The engineering laboratories provide a great way of verifying what the textbooks say – in the laboratories it was great to do experiments and see what was happening in real-life systems, really assisting in understanding the concepts in the unit."
-
The problem solving skills you’ve developed:
"As I have progressed, I have not really felt that I 'know' more, but that I know how to know more.
I know how to use resources, how to communicate and how to work with other people - I know how to know more. In this way, Murdoch has equipped me with vital skills for whatever the ‘real-world’ has in store for my future."
-
Your involvement with MESS…
"At the beginning of my studies, I never thought I would end up being one of 'those' people that do go and get involved in things.
MESS (Murdoch Engineering Student Society) has allowed me to interact with companies and industry, through securing corporate sponsorship for MESS and facilitating seminars with sponsors."
