Genetics and Molecular Biology is concerned with the structure and function of the molecules that are fundamental to life: DNA, RNA, proteins and metabolites. It provides the basis for the in depth study of organism function from genes through to phenotype, using cutting edge technologies. It also focuses on the importance of understanding the ‘omics, including genomics, as well as the software tools needed to solve problems at the molecular level. These techniques have widespread application in all aspects of modern biology, including medicine, forensic science, conservation biology and agriculture.
The Genetics and Molecular Biology major provides detailed study of modern molecular science and introduces you to the techniques associated with gene and protein expression, and genetic manipulation.

Our South Street campus hosts several world-class molecular research centres, including the WA Phenome Centre, the Institute for Immunology and Infectious Diseases, the State Agricultural Biotechnology Centre, the Separation Science and Metabolomics Laboratory and the Centre for Rhizobium Studies. You will have the opportunity to interact with researchers from these centres, gaining valuable experience.
